Microblading Healing Process: Day by Day

Microblading healing process

Microblading is a popular treatment that can transform your look. People often have many questions about the microblading treatment, but what about the microblading healing process? In this blog, we’ll be telling you everything you need to know about the healing cycle.

What is microblading?

Microblading is a form of semi-permanent makeup that has grown in popularity over the last few years. The treatment is completed on the eyebrows and can create stunning natural eyebrow hair.

The microblading process involves a handheld device being used to add pigment to the face. The pigment is applied gently to create fine hair strokes that provide the desired eyebrow shape.

Before any microblading treatment takes place, a detailed consultation should be completed. This allows the client to understand the process fully and means they can ask any questions.

How long does microblading take to heal?

The microblading device uses tiny needles to add the pigment. This means that minor cuts are made in the skin to allow the pigment to stay. As with any skin opening, the microbladed eyebrows will need time to heal.

Following treatment, the microblading healing process takes up to 21 days, though it can be less or more. During this time, the eyebrow appearance will change frequently. This is perfectly normal. If you are a microblading artist, ensure that your client knows this before the treatment.

Most people continue to work as normal after the microblading treatment. However, some people choose to take a few days off to allow for the first few days of healing to pass. Having swollen eyebrows can lead to people feeling self-conscious.

What do microbladed eyebrows look like after?

Immediately after microblading, the eyebrows usually appear darker in colour. There are a few reasons why this occurs. The first is due to the skin being irritated; this makes the skin darker and more red due to swelling.

Another reason is due to pigment sitting on the skin’s surface. This will naturally fade and will disappear when the face is washed. You must inform clients not to wash their eyebrows after the treatment, as it can cause the healing process to take longer and will impact the final shape and appearance.

Microblading healing stages: Day by day

There are many stages of microblading healing to think about. Our microblading course covers all aspects of treatment, healing and patient health and safety.

Microblading healing process day 1

The eyebrows will be much darker immediately after the treatment. Make sure that your client knows to expect dark eyebrows and inform them that the colour will eventually fade.

It is normal to experience swelling, tenderness, redness and possibly some slight bleeding. These side effects usually improve within a few days.

Microblading healing day 3 – 5

Once the swelling has gone down, the brows may become darker. Towards the end of this time frame, they may begin to scab over. Scabbing is an important part of healing anywhere on the skin but more so on a delicate area such as the face.

Skin scabs often come with itching, but it’s important to leave the skin to heal and avoid itching as you may risk pulling off a scab. This will prolong the healing process.

Day 6 – 8

Scabs appear and flake off naturally, allowing new skin cells to appear. While flaky brows are not ideal, they signify that the skin has almost healed. You can expect flaking to last for a few days before the true colour is revealed at around day 12.

Day 12 – 21

This is the end of the healing process. Your natural colour has arrived, and the hair strokes are becoming much more prominent. The skin should be healed, and the brows should be on point! Happy new brows!

When can I wash my eyebrows after microblading?

If you’ve just had a microblading treatment, your beauty therapist should have informed you how long to wait before washing your eyebrows. The general advice is to wait 10 days before washing your eyebrows.

Washing the brows generally means rubbing them, which may impact the skin’s ability to scab over. This is a crucial part of the microblading healing process.

Oily skin microblading healing process

During a pre-treatment consultation, you should assess the client’s skin type. Depending on the skin type, you may have to alter the microblading technique.

Our microblading course provides you with all of the skills and knowledge you need to complete microblading on all skin types.

Those with slightly oily or combination skin will find that microblading heals similarly to those with neither dry or oily skin. Those with more oily skin may notice the pigment spreads out more. As a microblading artist, you will need to be aware of this and alter the technique to provide the desired eyebrow look. On oily skin, this means spreading the strokes a little more and organising more frequent touch-ups.

How long does microblading last?

The amount of time microblading lasts will depend on a range of factors. Some of these factors are out of a person’s control, for example, skin type. Those with drier skin may find they can go a little longer between having the treatment or having touch-ups.

The length of time also depends on the level of aftercare. Microblading artists are responsible for providing aftercare information. Microblading aftercare instructions are generally simple and help the brows heal faster.

  • Keep the brows dry
  • Keep the brow area clean
  • Avoid exercise or excessive sweating
  • Avoid sun exposure
  • Avoid chemical treatments

Microbladed brows typically last anywhere between 12 and 18 months. This can be extended with touch-ups, proper care and maintenance.

The first top-up appointment is typically booked for 6 weeks after the initial microblading session. Waiting 6 weeks ensures the brows are completely healed and means you can clearly see any areas that require more pigment.

Touch-up microblading healing process

A touch-up session doesn’t last as long as a full microblading appointment. This is because a top-up is just completed to fill in any gaps in the hair strokes.

The follow-up appointment healing process typically takes up to one week. This appointment is a good time to let the client know how often they should have a microblading touch-up appointment to maintain their new eyebrows.
